And Hate Spills Forth

I'm sure that by now, you've all heard about Mel Gibson and his arrest for DUI last Friday in Los Angeles. If you haven't, here's a CNN story. Gibson made an utter ass of himself by asking the deputy who stopped him if he was Jewish, and then going on to say, reportedly, "Fucking Jews. The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world."

Nice. Really nice. Especially for someone who is in the public eye. Never mind how wrong that statement is.... Gibson later had "his people" (who *must* not be Jews) release a statement where he apologized for his comments, and tried to make amends to the Jewish community by saying that "Hatred of any kind goes against my faith." Yeah, riiiiiight. Doesn't look that way from here, buddy. Gibson's statement goes on to say that he wants to meet with Jewish religious leaders so that they can help him "discern the appropriate path for healing."

I'll give you a big hint here, Mel -- don't think hate. Don't think hatefully, and hate won't continue to spill from your lips like bile.

they say your true self comes out when you're drunk, the alcohol takes the inhibitions away & u just say what u truly feel. If that's so, he shouldn't be asking forgiveness for his hypocritical self. He should just admit to being the anti-semite that he is, not that he'd have the courage to do so. What do u think?

I suppose the only good thing about this is that no one can now pretend that The Passion of the Christ wasn't the work of a raving anti-Semite.

Molly, welcome, and I totally agree with you. If he weren't already predisposed to fell that way, there's no way that alcohol would make him say things he didn't feel. Sure, alcohol lowers your inhibitions, but it doesn't make you a bigot when you weren't one before.

Phantom -- people complained about the depiction of Jews in the "Passion", but it was all explained away. Not so easy to do now, is it.

Liz and APL -- you are both so right. Asshat of the highest order.

Sugar tits, was also one of my favorite comments.

After hearing his dad rant like a loon when "Passion" came out I guess we can all say that the apple definitely didn't fall from the tree.

Being drunk is certainly no excuse. If he was drunk and angry wouldn't he have said asshole, motherf*cker, or the like. That would be a typical insult, but to rave against Jews is something only an anti-semite would do.

I had someone say something similar to me about another people group recently. People can be so awful. I don't have words for what I want to say, but I don't like it.

Asshat with a feather on it.

If Mel would like to discuss appropriate paths with ME, I have a big suggestion for him: Remove head from ass, THEN speak.

To say nothing of my feelings about people who get hammered and proceed to drive. Fuckwit.

The one thing that disgust me more than bigotry is hypocrisy. And one of the main people calling for Mel to be "blacklisted" is Ari Emanuel (brother of a Democratic Congressman from Illinois) who just happens to be Michael Moore’s agent.
Michael Moore declared in Liverpool (quoted in the New York Times, June 26, 2004) that the embattled Jewish state of Israel represented one of the modern world’s centers of evil: “It’s all part of the same ball of wax, right? The oil companies, Israel, Halliburton.” Moore has reapeatedly made such comments against Israel, but Ari doesn't seem to have a problem with that..
