The Culture of Fat, Part Deux

Pardon me whilst I drag out my soapbox again. I'm once again perparing to gear up on behalf of fat people everywhere. Or, at least, the ones like me who are tired of being made fun of and derided.

For those of you out there who know someone fat -- thank you for all the times that you didn't remind us how fat we are. Thank you for the times when you complimented us on our clothes, or our work, or a recent accomplishment without tying into it that we are overweight. Thank you. Thank you for being supportive and non-discriminatory.

It astounds me that we live in a world where the following conversation could take place, and no one thinks there was too much "wrong" with what was said. That there are people who are still this judgemental and bigoted:

Two of my colleagues were in the main hallway today. I said good morning, and passed on by. After I was a short distance away, the two have the following conversation:

Woman 1: "Hm. I see KLee got her hair cut over the break."
Woman 2: "Yeah....and with those shoes and that haircut, she looks more like a fat dyke than usual."

Wow! Two subgroups insulted in one! It's a Bigot Two-fer!

You have got to be frickin' kidding me.

I think you should squash the two of them like frickin' grapes. Honestly. Where is the common decency these days?

You're right. That's one versatile slimeball bigot you got there. Nice to know she's having an influence on the youth of America.

You want I should break her kneecaps, boss?

In all seriousness, please don't let such idiocy slow you down from all the ways you are making the world around you a better place.

APL and I obviously think alike because "Holy Shit!!" were the first words out of my mouth.

I cannot believe that an adult person would say something like that within earshot. Unbelievable!

Scary thought that she is teaching children.

I was honestly so gobsmacked that I was all I could do not to walk into the wall, much less wheel around and confront the two.

I am ashamed that I let the moment pass without a scathing rejoinder, but I was so stunned that I was left without one.

I'm still sort of amazed by the arrogance....

This I cannot believe. I am aghast. My mouth is agape. I am all the AG--things you can be. I would rip them to shreds. I am SO SORRY this happened to you. It's just wrong. It could have been me, just as easily, and I am horrified for all of us.

Holy shit was not the first thing I thought.

The first thing I thought was much less polite.

I'm with CD, I've got my louisville slugger...point me at them.

I am speechless. I wish I could give them a piece of my mind.

I was in the "Holy Shit!" camp, too. Wow. That's two women whose mothers did a poor job raising them, in all kinds of ways.

Oh my good god. How could something be so wrong with someone as to think that that's an appropriate thing to say? Ever? What a completely broken human being.

She is lucky I wasn't there.

Thanks, all. I appreciate the support.

Corny, there's no need to go after kneecaps. I wouldn't want you to mar the lovely surface of your Louisville Slugger with such bigoted blood.

The sad thing is, I started walking a mile a day during my lunch hour that very self-same day. I didn't want to give these people the impression that what they had said was the impetus for trying to lose more weight. It just happened that I had planned to start that anyway.

I am also speechless, and sitting here in disbelief. What is WRONG with people? Seriously?

I'm mortified. I'm so sorry there are people out there that can be such assholes, Klee.
