Break Out The Peppermint Schnapps-- School's Over!

In honor of the momentous occasion of two paid weeks off from work *and* no rambunctious little charges to herd like a farmer, I give you a Christmas-themed meme.

I don't remember were I got this from. Either I stole it from one of the people I read, or I stole it from one of the people THEY read. Or, maybe I got it as a mass-email and decided it would be good blog fodder. In any case, here you go!

----------------------------------

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags?

I actually LIKE wrapping presents. However, there are always those oddly-shaped items that you have to resort to a bag for. I typically do NOT use bags for Juggling Freak and Offspring simply because they are peekers. I thought that Hallmark’s motion-activated gift bags this year would be a great solution for the Incredibly Sneaky-Peeky Duo, but the cat would most likely set it off at 3 in the morning, and I’d have to kill her.

2. Real tree or artificial?

Real trees are best, especially for the scent, but they’re so messy. We got an artificial when Offspring was small, and we’ve used an artificial ever since.

3. When do you put up the tree?

Juggling Freak is a total Scrooge who refuses to do one single iota of Christmas decorating until it is actually December. Usually, we do the tree on the first weekend of December.

4. When do you take the tree down?

As soon as I can fully admit to myself that the holiday is once again over. (sigh.)

5. Do you like egg nog?

Blargh! No. I’ll repeat my answer from last year’s meme – drinking eggnog is like saying you want to get a little drunk, but you also want some pancakes.

6. Favorite gift received as a child?

I have a few that I remember quite fondly. I had a plastic cow that drank water and you could then milk a very watery, white “milk” from her plastic udders. It was probably made in China and highly toxic, but it was the 70s, and no one thought about stuff like that then.

7. Hardest person to buy for?

My parents. My mother has absolutely EVERYTHING, and my father gets harder to buy for each year.

8. Easiest person to buy for?

Offspring. I am usually pretty well versed on what is or is not to her taste. Though, as she gets older, she gets harder to buy for. It’s not all toys and dolls anymore.

9. Do you have a nativity scene?

No. The one I used to have was made out of glass, and the blasted cat shattered some of the pieces years back. However, we do have several Playmobil advent calendars, which are lots of fun.

10. Have you ever recycled a Christmas gift?

Yes. Usually stuff that I get from students, because really – how many lotions from Bath and Body Works does one REALLY need?

11. Lights on a Christmas Tree?

Hells, yeah! The more the better, in my opinion! Juggling Freak says that I like so many lights on the tree that you can get a tan by sitting by it.

12. When do you start shopping?

I sort of look around all year long, and will very occasionally pick up the odd gift on vacation somewhere new. I tend to start shopping more in depth in early November.

13. Favorite Christmas song?

Lately, “Breath of Heaven” by Amy Grant, though I am also partial to “The Holly and the Ivy” by Bing Crosby.

14. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas?

Praline cookies, also known locally as “Christmas Crack.” It’s THAT addictive!

15. Mail or email Christmas cards?

Are you seriously asking ME this question?!? Mail, and all handmade cards! Just did 12 cards and a gift card holder on Saturday!

16. Worst Christmas gift you received?

Hm. I don’t think I’ve had a really BAD gift, unless you count the horrid Christmas sweaters I used to get in childhood that looked like they were picked by blind shut-in maiden aunts.

17. Favorite Christmas movie?

A Christmas Story! How can you resist “Fra-gee-lay” and Ralphie eating Lifebouy?

18. Travel at Christmas or stay at home?

I like to stay home, but we usually travel, if only the half-hour all the way across town to my mother’s. We try to go to CityOfMyBirth to see all my father and grandmother, but it’s not always possible.

19. Can you name all of Santa’s reindeer?

Of course. I have to teach them to my students every year. I’d be in a real pickle if I didn’t know them.

2o. Angel on top of tree, or star?

Neither. We have a replica of Disney World’s Cinderella Castle, complete with Cinderella. We’re Disney slaves.

21. Open gifts Christmas Eve or Christmas morning?

As a child, we were always allowed to choose one present to open on Christmas Eve, and then all the rest on Christmas morning. As an adult, we have so many relatives to see that we do Christmas Eve at my mother’s house, our own Christmas on Christmas Day morning, and then head over to my mother-in-law’s. My father and my father-in-law are fitted in wherever possible.

22. Most annoying thing about this time of year?

People who knock others over in their haste to get to the best deals. I once saw a woman snatch a Tickle-Me-Elmo out of a little girl’s hands. Sad, really. This year, I saw one woman punch another in the face for stealing her parking place that she was waiting for.

23. Favorite ornament theme or color?

I don’t do the theme or one-color thing. I like to have a multi-colored tree, and I put as many of the special ornaments as I can fit on the tree on there.

24. Favorite for Christmas dinner?

My mother-in-law is FAMOUS for not being able to cook, so we’ve gone to a local Japanese restaurant on Christmas Day for the last 10 years or so. It started off because they were the only thing open, but now it’s become something we look forward to.

25. What do you want for Christmas this year?

Personally, I’d like to lose weight and be healthier. And, I’d like more love for our planet and less war and strife. On a more selfish note, I’ve asked for lots of crafting stuff, and some good books. Otherwise, I want my family to be happy with the things that I’ve gotten them. The giving is the more fun part -- I like watching other people’s reactions more than I like getting things for me.

A Complete Failure

22

As a 1930s wife, I am
Very Poor (Failure)

Take the test!

As seen at Miche's place -- I can honestly say that I'm neither surprised nor upset to be a dismal failure at this particular test. I think I knew I'd blown it when I realized that I either a) wear a soiled apron while I cook my husband his dinner -- or, heaven forbid, *pyjamas*!, or b) I can't seem to even WEAR hosiery, much less keep the seam in them straight!

Oh, well. As they say, well-behaved women rarely make history.

Not All That Surprised

You Belong in 1967

You are a free spirit with a huge heart. Love, peace, and happiness rule - oh, and drugs too.

Drugs? Moi? Nah. Though, I will admit to the "free spirit" part quite readily. You think they somehow heard of my not-so-secret addiction to the Monkees?

Seen at CCW's.

Hello, Cleveland!

As seen at Marni's place, here's a creative meme that lets your inner headbanger rock and roll all night long and party ever-ry day. Let's Make a Band, where you create your own album cover! The rules are as follows:

1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:RandomThe first article title on the page is the name of your band.

2. http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3The last four words of the very last quote is the title of your album.(you might have to click new random quotes at the bottom)

3. http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days/The third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.

You then take the pic and add your band name and the album title to it, then post your pic. The above is mine, and tickets are on sale now!

Stop Me Before I Steal Again!

I stole this meme from Marni, who, in turn, stole it from CCW.

------------------------------------------------------------
Have you ever licked the back of a CD to try to get it to work?
Uh, no. I teach kindergarten, remember? I already have my lifetime allotment of germs.

What's the largest age difference between yourself and someone you’ve dated? Seven years. My first love was seven years older than me, and it was a long-distance relationship. You can see how it was doomed from the start.

Ever been in a car wreck? Yeah. Most have been fender-benders, but the worst was when a drunk guy ran a red light and hit me so hard that we did a complete 180, and the impact bent the entire car frame. The insurance company totaled the car out. The guy got out of the truck at first, but was acting oddly, so I had the foresight to get the plate number. After about 5 minutes of him lurching and weaving around, he hopped back into the truck and hauled tail. The police later found the truck in the KMart parking lot, and the dude called it in as stolen. They didn't buy his story, either. I ended up having to go down and identify him in a mug shot array.

Were you popular in high school? So far from popular, it was laughable. I was one of a group of about five misfits who lived on the fringe of Shoebox School. When I transferred to Gigantic High in the summer between my sophomore and junior years, I went from Nobody to Just Another Face In The Crowd. My graduating class had 222 seniors, so it was hard to NOT find a group in which you fit there. I still wasn't what you'd call "popular", but I was also no longer totally miserable.

Have you ever been on a blind date? A couple. Most of them ended with the guy telling me that I was too fat for him to be interested.

Are looks important? Not if you already have them. If you don't, it's another kettle of fish altogether. I'd like to say they don't matter, but as someone who has been judged on the basis of my physical appearance all my life, I know better. I didn't look for a mate based on looks, though I think my husband is very attractive. I looked for him based on who he is inside. And, I got a pretty sweet deal, if I say so myself.

Do you have any friends that you've known for 10 years or more? Yes -- my friend OzChick. We've been friends for about 12 years now. And my husband, who is my best friend. We've been together a little more than 16 years. We are nearing our 15th wedding anniversary this November.

By what age would you like to be married? I got married at 22, and I think it worked well for both of us. We were always considered "more mature" than a lot of people our age, and we were both ready to be married. We had had serious discussions about marriage, fidelity, children, and other issues while we were still dating, and we had decided that we ready to put all those plans and ideals to action. I'd like my daughter to be a little older than we were, when and if she decides to marry.

Does the number of people a person's slept with affect your view of them? It depends. As a friend, no. I don't care who or how many. As a potential partner, it does in the sense that I must protect myself in this day and age. I don't care if you've sowed your wild oats -- I did some sowing of my own in my time -- but I need to know whether you are a high risk. (Of course, this is all moot, since I'm married, but this is my train of thought behind this issue.)

Are you a good tipper? If the service merits it. I don't undertip to be cheap, but I do both reward good service, and withhold from crappy service.

What's the most you have spent for a haircut? Fifty bucks, I think. That was back in high school, though. I go to a place around the corner now, and I pay $12.95, and I get every sixth haircut for free. Hey -- why pay more when this place gives me what I want for cheap?

Have you ever had a crush on a teacher? I did -- on my English teacher in middle school (who was also my drama club advisor.) When I grew up, I did some theater work with both him and his wife, and I could not, for the life of me, see why I'd crushed on him so hard as a tween. He's a nice guy, sure -- but not THAT nice. Odd circumstance -- Offspring had him as one of her Gifted instructors for a couple of years.

Have you ever peed in public? Not that I can remember. I can't imagine a situation in which I would feel comfortable dropping trou in public.

What song do you want played at your funeral? I don't have a particular one in mind, but I'll leave that up to the ones who are left behind. I hope it's something that makes people remember me fondly.

What would your last meal be before getting executed? There used to be a Mexican restaurant here that served the most delicious dish called "Pollo Fundido." It was shredded chicken with sour cream, wrapped in a tortilla and deep fried, and served with a queso blanco on the top. SO GOOD! Unfortunately, that place burned down 20 years ago, and the owners went out of business. If I can't have that, a meal from my favorite Japanese place.

Beatles or Stones? Beatles, no question.

If you had to pick one person on earth to die, who would it be? I, personally, don't feel comfortable playing judge, jury, and executioner.

Beer, wine or hard liquor? Liquor -- but only in fruity, girly drinks with paper umbrellas. Other than that, I don't drink alcohol. And, I only have that once in a blue moon.

Do you have any phobias? Phobias, no. I do have fears, though. Fears of dying in a car accident, fear of guns, fears of being attacked, and a fear of dying by violence.

What are your plans for the future? Immediate future? I'm going to finish this post and get something to eat. Long term, I'd like to go back to school, but I'd need more disposable income.

Do you walk around the house naked? No, but we, as a family, do tend to eschew the wearing of pants in the house. JF calls us the Peter Pantsless family. It's too darn hot here for most of the year to wear superfluous clothing.

If you were an animal what would you be? I think I'd like to be a bird, so I can soar free.

What do you do as soon as you walk in the house? Put down my stuff and take off my pants. (See? I told you we were pantsless!)

Do you like horror or comedy? Comedy. Horror holds no appeal for me anymore. I used to like it somewhat when I was a teenager, but I don't care for it now.

Are you missing anyone? Yes. My cousin, who died when I was 17. There was so much living that he didn't get to do. Also, friends that I never see anymore. People who are no longer with us.

Where do you want to live when you are old? Somewhere close to the water.

Who is the person you can count on the most? My husband. I have no fear that he won't always be there for me.

If you could date any celebrity past or present, who would it be? Sean Connery. Yum!

What did you dream last night? I dreamed that I was in the hospital, having some tests run.

What is your favorite sport to watch? Figure skating. I don't really care for sports, so if I have to watch it, it has to be something highly visual.

Are you named after anyone? There's a story that I'm named after a character in "Gone With the Wind", but I'm not sure how much of that is true.

What is your favorite alcoholic drink? A Pina Colada. Heavy on the coconut!

Non alcoholic drink? Sonic's Cherry Limeade. And lately, Crystal Light Raspberry Ice.

Have you ever been in love? Yes. Still am.

Do you sing in the shower? No. It's usually so early in the morning now, that I'm lucky to be walking upright and functioning at all.

Have you ever been arrested? Nope. I'm a goody-goody.

What is your favorite Holiday? Christmas.

Would you ever get plastic surgery? Probably not. Not unless I had some sort of disfiguring accident. Just for kicks, no. I can't see spending that large amount of money on stuff like that. Though I don't condemn those who do. It's just not for me.

Have you ever caught a fish? Yes, when I was small. Fishing isn't a priority these days.

Groovin' to the 80s Tunes and Freaking Out the Cat

Some of you may have already discovered the greatness that is Pandora. I know I heard about it from one of you blog friends or another, and it is. absolutely. rockin'! I started my channel a few months ago, but have been tinkering with the song bookmark for the better part of three days. If anyone wants to see my personal profile, you can see it here. (Don't laugh at my choice of music -- I have been finding all those songs from the 80s that I loved.)

You can tell that I'm a creature of the New Wave generation... my bookmarks include not only my favorites Marillion and U2, but also blasts from the (80s) past like a-ha, Howard Jones, Everything But the Girl, Yaz, Tears for Fears, Go West, Pet Shop Boys, Level 42, Pseudo Echo, Arcadia, Wham, ABC, the Hooters, Mr. Mister, and Paul Young. And lots more that I plan on adding.

The *best* thing about Pandora, though -- is if you don't like my station, create your own!

UPDATED: I think I've fixed the broken link, and I changed the profile page to be viewable now. Sorry! Thanks for pointing that out, Coffeypot!

Q and A

I got tagged for this meme ages and ages ago. It's been so long ago that I no longer remember who tagged me for it in the first place. At any rate, I am low on ideas, and high on frustration with the blog, so I'm using it as a place saver. Until I think of something better.

11. When you were twelve years old, what did you want to be when you grew up? - An archeologist.

Purely in the Interest of Science, You Understand

I'm one of those bloggers that asks the hard questions -- the questions like: "Was it YOU who farted in the elevator?" And: "If 7/11 is open 24 hours a day, why is there a lock on the door?" And: "If I were to donate this excess bag of flesh I call a body to science, how much would it net me?" And, lo and behold, here is the answer!

$4940.00

Not bad, huh? Probably more than I'm worth, though. Wish I could collect that BEFORE my untimely demise.....

Eight Things

The lovely and talented CCW tagged me a while back for this "Eight Things" meme. Here are the rules:

-Each player starts with eight random facts/habits about themselves.
-People who are tagged need to write their own blog about their eight things and post these rules.
-At the end of your blog, you need to choose eight people to get tagged and list their names.
-Don’t forget to leave them a comment telling them they’re tagged, and to read your blog.

Here goes:

1) I love to sing. I usually sing along with whatever CD/radio station I'm playing in the car, and I usually wear my iPod and sing while I wash dishes. I did lots of musical theater back in college, and I enjoyed every minute of it. Juggling Freak gets shaky and queasy when he hears "We Need A Little Christmas," though. Brings back bad memories for him.

2) I have very thin fingernails, and whenever they grow very much past the tips of my finger, they tend to shred, and I end up having to either trim them or bite them off because having a shredded nail drives me up the wall.

3) I read books of all types, from trashy, bodice-ripping romance novels to archaeology textbooks; but my favorites have to be mysteries and "period books" -- those books that are set in a specific time period, like Edward Rutherfurd's "London" or "Sarum", or books about medieval life or ancient Egypt. I like being taken back to another time, another place. I'm fond of Steven Saylor's "Roma Sub Rosa" series featuring Gordianus the Finder, and Lynda S. Robinson's Lord Meren Mysteries all about Egypt in the time of the boy king, Tut.

4) My husband and I used to do medieval reenactment. I made a lot of our outfits, and I must say that he looks darn good in tights. (Okay, so that's only peripherally about me, but so what. And, I really do think he looks good in tights.)

5) I haven't done it in a while, but some of the skills I learned out of that period of medieval reenacting were how to make my own soap and perfume. It's very time consuming work, but I enjoy it. I gave out homemade soaps one year as holiday gifts, each tailored to the recipient by scent and other additives. For example, my mother loves all things related to the sea, so hers was scented with coconut (to remind her of sunscreen) and had generous amounts of sea salt to help scrub off the peeling layers on her feet from the abrasive sand.

6) Based on that old "use your childhood pet's name, and the name of the street you lived on as a child" formula, my porn star name would be "Bandit Paradise." I find that hilarious.

7) I'm a very picky eater. I have that pesky, life-threatening seafood allergy going for me, so there's a whole menu section that I can't have. I'm not fond of a lot of vegetables, so I tend to make very basic, very mild recipes while my lovely spouse then loads his own portion heavily with every spice known to rupture esophaguses. (What *is* the plural form of "esophagus?" "Espohagi"?)

8) I love nuts. I will eat just about every nut that you put in front of me *except* cashews. I may be the only person on the planet who actually dislikes cashews. I love almonds and macadamias especially. I will go to the Fresh Market on the rare occasion to splurge and buy the large tub of almond butter. That's a "luxury purchase" for me because it usually costs about the price I'd pay for an entree in a restaurant. I love the chunky peanut butter, and I will be selfish on occasion and make brownies with walnuts because then I get more of them. If I make plain ones, (or nutless wonders, as JF calls them) they disappear far too quickly. Of course, no brownies are ever what you would call "safe" in our household, nuts or no.

So, that's my list . I hope I haven't scared any more people off with it. I won't tag any specific people because so many of you have done it already. If you are interested in doing this meme, please feel free!

My Visual DNA

Everyone I know seems to have done this Visual DNA thingy recently, and being a total, dyed-in-the-wool lemming, I had to do it, too. Here are my answers:

I'm Smarter Than I Thought I'd Be....

StupidTester.com says I'm 4% Stupid! How stupid are you? Click Here!

Of course, that 4% is because I spelled my own name wrong, but I was disinclined to further any Southern stereotypes by trumpeting that fact to the heavens...

Oh, wait... I just did. Dagnabbit! I hate it when a carefully constructed plan goes awry!

And Yet Another Meme

As seen at the still-gorgeous, even while sick Karyn's, I give you yet another meme.

-------------------

1. The phone rings. Who are you hoping it is?

My father, with an update on his recent hospital tests and hopefully, the results.

2. When shopping at the grocery store, do you return your cart?

No. That's Offspring's job. She hates it when I don't let her return the cart.

3. In a social setting, are you more of a talker or a listener?

I listen at first, but once I feel comfortable, I've been known to throw my opinion into the mix.

4. If abandoned alone in the wilderness, would you survive?

Only if I'm abandoned near a fully-stocked cabin that I happen to run across. Otherwise, I'm lunch for some bear. And maybe dinner, too.

5. Do you like to ride horses?

No. Not since I grew bosoms. The last time I rode, I whanged myself in the noggin with my own breasts. That stopped the riding cold.

6. Did you ever go to camp as a kid?

Yeah. I went to both week-long camps, and once for a whole summer.

7. What was your favorite board game as a kid?

As a young kid, probably something like Clue. As an 'older kid' - high school age, Trivial Pursuit. Or Pictionary.

8. If a sexy person was pursuing you, but you knew he/she was taken what would you do?

First, I would check to see that they had the right person. Then, I'd think it was a joke of some sort, and if/when I determined that it wasn't some sort of in-bad-taste prank, I would tell them that I'm happily married, and I don't need anyone else, but thanks for the ego-boost.

9. Are you judgmental?

I try very hard not to be. I feel that I am more judgmental of actions than of people. I don't focus on race, sex, religion, or creed, but I sometimes get offended in conversation where no offense is meant. I often read more subtext into things than is really there.

10. Would you date someone with different religious beliefs?

Yes, and have. Am married to someone with very different beliefs, and it's going pretty well, thank you for asking.

11. Are you continuing your education?

No, but I need to. I do take continuing ed classes for my recertification, but I need to go back to school full time. I just don't have the resources to do that at this time.

12. Do you know how to shoot a gun?

No, and I don't particularly want to. I don't like guns. I have an innate fear of them. I've been held at gunpoint before, and I've never really gotten over either instance. I have the horrible fear that I will die by gun violence.

13. If your house was on fire, what's the first thing you'd grab?

After making sure that my family was out safely, our cat. Then, if we're all safe, the baby pictures and wedding albums.

14. How often do you read books?

As much as possible. Sometimes instead of sleeping. And, I REALLY like to sleep.

15. Do you think more about the past, present or future?

I don't live in the past, but I do keep a summer home there. I try not to belabor the past, but I tend to forget a lot of the "bad parts" and romanticize it a bit. I need to live more in the here and now.

16. What is your favorite children's book?

For young kids, things like "Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type" and "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs". For older kids, anything in the "Harry Potter" series, and my favorite growing up was "The Secret Garden." I recently read a "tween novel", "13 Little Blue Envelopes," which I enjoyed a great deal.

17. How tall are you?

Six feet. That was the verdict at the doctor's the last time I was officially measured, but the husband is six feet as well, and I'm very slightly shorter.

18. Where is your ideal house located?

It's an ivy-covered mansion in London. Or a secret apartment in Cinderella Castle at Disney World. Or a permanent (and FREE) suite at the Grand Floridian Resort at Disney World.....

19. Last person you talked to?

Juggling Freak.

21. When was the last time you were at Olive Garden?

The day after Christmas. We had to spend that gift card from my parents!

22. What are your keys on your key chain for?

My car, JF's car, the house, my classroom, my mother's house, a door key to the place where my Girl Scouts meet, and one to the cash box that we take out to cookie sales.

23. What did you do last night?

Cooked dinner, ate dinner, washed dishes. Got Offspring ready for bed, read her some more from "Diary of a Young Girl" by Anne Frank for her Social Science Fair Project, and got her in bed. Packed lunch boxes, attempted to post over at Phantom's (off and on for about 3 hours), and got ready for bed. Read until 12:30, and finally went to bed because I knew that the alarm would ring early, and I would be hating myself in the morning for staying up late.

24. Where is your current pain at?

She's in her bedroom. Oh -- wait....you mean *actual* pain.....In the foot with plantar's fasciitis.

25. Do you like mustard?

Regular mustard, no. Honey mustard, yes.

26. Do you like your mom or dad?

I love them both. Didn't always LIKE them, but I always loved them.

27. How long does it take you in the shower?

Right about seven minutes. I'm a wash and get-the-heck-outta-Dodge kind of gal. It helps having very short hair.

28. What movie do you want to see right now?

Nothing too much. Am eagerly awaiting "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix."

29. Do you put lotion on your dog or cats?

Don't own a dog, and I could never conceive of a time where putting lotion on my cat might work out well for any of us.

30. What did you do for New Year's?

Ate dinner out with my family, went home, and watched TV together.

31. Do you think The Grudge was scary?

Didn't watch it. Didn't care to.

32. Do you own a camera phone?

No.

33. What's the last letter of your middle name?

N

34. Who did you vote for on American Idol?

I didn't watch any of the various incarnations of American Idol.

Better Late Than Never, Right?

Waaaay back in November, the wonderful Marni tagged me for a meme that she had been sent by her cousin, the R.E.M.-loving Beth. I am totally slack, and I have not gotten around to heeding Marni's call, but now that the ol' blog is beginning to collect cobwebs, and I'm reeeeally low on the creativity scale today -- a meme it is! Thanks to Marni for tagging me, and to Beth for the roundabout blog idea! (Of course, we won't even mention here that Marni has tagged me for another meme AFTER that one, and I think I remember Karyn tagging me for something before she was laid low with a nasty cold. Who knows? At this point, I'm lucky my brain hasn't exploded from all the assorted stress and general "stuff" happening in my life. Where was I? Oh, yes....the meme.)

Beth's (and Marni's) task was to talk about her past crushes. Oh, you lucky people. You are in for an angsty roller coaster ride!

I was always one of those girls that boys would love to partner up with for a writing assignment, but the actual social contact? Not so much. Most of these crushes were unrequited. The ones that developed into some type of relationship -- well, most of those ended badly as well.

*My first crush that I really remember was in middle school. His name was Joey, and he was THE cutest boy at Shoebox School. All the girls were head-over-heels mad about Joey, including my best friend. I felt really odd that we both liked the same boy, considering that he paid more attention to her. So, I just mooned over him a lot, and didn't really say anything to anyone. One day after school, I ran into him in the deserted hallway. I don't really remember how things devolved so fast but I *distinctly* remember him flashing his nether regions at me. Me, in all my witty glory said, "Put that thing away!" Oddly, I also remember thinking, "Is that the best pickup trick he has?" Things went aboslolutely nowhere, but I snickered like a grade schooler any time he got near me after that, thinking, "I've seen his wang!" I was about 11 or so -- what do I know of maturity at this point?

*Another crush was a boy named Michael G. We met in drama class. He was cute, but was "going out" with another girl in our group. (I say "going out" because dates (at this point) involved us sitting together during rehearsals and holding hands under our coats or scripts.) this other girl that he was "seeing" was a really snotty, manipulative girl, and she was constantly telling him what to do and what to say and wear. We were about 12! (It starts early, apparently.) After a while, he got sick of her, and he transferred his affection to me. That relationship lasted the duration of the play, and then I never saw him again. I heard he moved away some months later.

*In my long list of people named Michael that I dated, Michael M. was a real slice of something or another. This particular Michael I met through my best friend, and we dated for about six months. He seemed very sweet, even going so far as to tutor me in algebra and taking me on moonlit walks by a secluded lake. He was half-German, so he had a nice little accent that drove me bonkers. We had a great time together until he told me that he was only biding time until his old girlfriend came crawling back to him. Needless to say, that relationship ended shortly after that conversation.

*And there was Andy. Andy was a guy I met right after I arrived at Gigantic High School, and who kindly gave me a ride home every now and again. He was a year older than I was, so we didn't run with the same crowds anyway, and I had it bad for Andy, but he, sadly, never returned my feelings. At the half-term of the school year, he got transferred to another schedule, and we no longer ate lunch at the same time. Andy disappeared into Gigantic High, and we ran into each other very sporadically over the rest of the year. He finally faded from view during the summer.

*Chris* was a nice boy from the outskirts of the city whom I again met through friends. I went to a party one night, and Chris was there, and we struck up a conversation. We hung out the whole evening, and he got my phone number. We started talking on the phone, and met at a local bowling alley for "dates" while his father bowled. We dated for a few months, and then his father got transferred to Florida. We wrote for a while, and things sort of trickled to a stop. In college, I heard from him a few times -- he had joined the Navy, and was deployed to the Middle East during the Gulf War. We wrote letters for a while, and I sent care packages to him from the states, filled with cookies and little extras that he couldn't get on a ship in the middle of the ocean. After he returned from the war, we tried going out again, but he surprised me by telling me gently that he was gay. We stayed good friends, and he even later attended my wedding. I haven't talked to him in years, but I remember him fondly.

*I met JD in college. JD and I were both taking Theater Lab, and working on the current production that quarter. He was fun-loving and devil-may-care, and we struck up a friendship right away. He knew I was interested, and was way too polite to do something as mean as to brush me off. He let me down very gently, and began dating another member of our theater troupe, Melanie*. To their credit, we three often hung out together, and they never made me feel like a third wheel. I got to know his entire family, and we often spent lots of time at their home, gaming well into the wee hours of the morning. We were never anything more than "just friends" and I began to look for love elsewhere. We remained good friends for quite a few years, until he moved away. The last I heard, he married a lady from his church who had two children from a previous marriage, and he was as happy as could be being a husband and father. I still miss hanging out with him.

*Another crush I met through the theater was David. David was a deejay at a local radio station, I mooned over him from afar. He was also aware of my interest, but seemed completely uninterested in me. We hung out a few times, and I even crashed at his apartment one night after a late rehearsal. Nothing ever happened, but a co-worker of his who had the hots for David got highly agitated when she discovered that I had "spend the night" with David and threw a huge rock through my bedroom window. David faded from my radar after the perfomances concluded, and it's a good thing, since I was a poor college student -- I couldn't afford any more replacement windows!

*I met Jack* at another friend's party. I had come with JD and Melanie, and when they got ready to leave, Jack and I were still talking. Jack offered to drive me back to my car later that night, when I was ready to go. Jack swept me off my feet that night, and we spent a whirlwind six weeks together. Jack seemed like a deal too good to be true until he played me this song and dance story about how he really needed to focus on his "career" at that point. He said that it wasn't fair that he would have too spend less and less time with me, and more and more at work, and he really thought I deserved more than that. I would have taken this announcement more seriously if he hadn't been employed in the plumbing department at Home Depot. This break up really hurt because the relationship was still so new, and I wasn't expecting it at all. Hindsight being what it is, I got out when the gettin' was good. The skeeze went on to date my best friend. And from her, I heard he moved on to a girl I'd gone to Shoebox School with who was an even bigger skeeze than he was. Who knows -- they may even still be skeezy together today.

That's about all of the "crushes." I'm sure I had more, but these are the ones I remember really well. There were also some more serious relationships than "crushes", but those are for another time.

(* not their real names)

I Should Have Expected This

Gord has done it again. Here's another cute quiz that I shamelessly stole from his blog....

KLee --
