How well they know me....

So, I'm with my Girl Scouts tonight, and we're doing an activity that is meant to showcase and highlight the positive aspects of each girl sitting around the table. We trace the pattern of our hand, and inside our hand, other people around the table have to write something nice about us. Each person passes their hand around, and we all take turns writing down positive comments. I caution the girls before hand (I have eight 9 year olds) that we are not writing down negative stuff -- we are thinking about the things that make us special, and unique.

Girl T's hand says "funny", "loveable", "always smiling", "good boss"...

When my hand goes around the table, one of my girls says. "How do you say "loudmouth" in a positive way?"

Umm, spirited? Talkative and friendly? Did you ask her how to say "says inappropriate things" in a positive way?

Ha!

Opinionated? Boisterous? Self-assured?

That is so cute! Aren't kids wonderful? I don't even want to know what Kid L says at school or Girl Scouts. She talks a lot so I am sure they all know way too much about me.

BTW, my mother told me a great phrase: "Tact is telling someone where to go so nicely that they actually look forward to the trip."

That is a great story!

What word did you suggest?

My suggestion was "assertive." But, then they all dissolved into helpless laughter because my word started with "a-s-s". Ah, the humor of the nine year old.

I told them that other ways to say that (besides "bossy") is "shows leadership", "talkative", "always has ideas", "bubbly", "confident"..

There were lots of ways to say that without having to mess with me, but it wouldn't have been nearly as much fun for them! No --the girl that said it wasn't trying to be mean, she was trying to follow directions, and was honestly looking for an answer. Saddest part of it all -- she's right. :)
